It will air at 8:15pm on ITV1.<\/p>\n<p>According to a synopsis, the episode will follow John Barnaby (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/midsomer-murders-itv-cast\/\">Neil Dudgeon<\/a>) as he investigates a murder at Challis Court \u2013 a gated estate which serves as a tight-knit community for retired police officers.<\/p>\n<p>As he begins to look into the case, he soon realises that the killer is likely to be an ex-police officer too.<\/p>\n<p>The episode also includes a guest appearance from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/movies\/oppenheimer-review\/\">Oppenheimer<\/a> star Tom Conti, who will be playing Barnaby\u2019s former boss and now Challis Court resident Sebastian Cabot.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in this week\u2019s issue of <strong>Radio Times magazine, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/midsomer-murders-line-of-duty-twist-newsupdate\/\">Dudgeon teased<\/a> that the episode was like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/line-of-duty-martin-compston-season-7-plans-newsupdate\/\">Line of Duty<\/a> \u201cwith a Midsomer twist\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething happens in a retirement home for ex-coppers, and it\u2019s difficult because we realise early on we may be feeling the collar of one of our own,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, fans won\u2019t have to wait too long for another new episode \u2013 with the next instalment set to air the following week, at 8pm on Tuesday 23rd July.<\/p>\n<p>That episode is titled A Grain of Truth, and will revolve around events at a <span class=\"sc-2d37a7c7-2 PeLXr\" role=\"presentation\" data-testid=\"plot-xl\">trendy organic bakery in a restored mill which has been causing resentment among several villagers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The episode description teases that while the initial complaints are not taken seriously, several people end up being <span class=\"sc-2d37a7c7-2 PeLXr\" role=\"presentation\" data-testid=\"plot-xl\">dosed with a dangerous hallucinogenic before someone ends up dead \u2013 prompting the start of Barnaby\u2019s investigation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"headline post-header__title post-header__title--headline-layout\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"heading-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/midsomer-murders-line-of-duty-twist-newsupdate\/\">Neil Dudgeon: \u2018Midsomer Murders has gone Line of Duty \u2013 with a twist\u2019<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"headline post-header__title post-header__title--headline-layout\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/midsomer-murders-line-of-duty-twist-newsupdate\/\">McDonald &amp; Dodds confirms season 4 air date on ITV<\/a><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-1f50b7c-3 ZYFjc\">\n<div role=\"presentation\">\n<p>Midsomer Murders if one of ITV\u2019s longest-running dramas, debuting in 1997 and evolving into a mainstay of the TV schedules.<\/p>\n<p>Dudgeon has led the cast as DCI John Barnaby since season 13 in 2010, after taking over from original star John Nettles, who played John\u2019s older cousin DCI Tom Barnaby.<\/p>\n<p>Chatting to\u00a0<strong>Radio Times magazine<\/strong> about whether it\u2019s easier to play the lead role after 14 years doing so, Dudgeon said: \u201cIt was hard at the beginning because John had done it for 14 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they\u2019d cancelled me after one series, that would have been embarrassing! It gets easier, but I try to keep it fresh. Even if I\u2019ve gone through the script 50 times, I\u2019ll look at it again and have another thought. It\u2019s still extremely pleasant and I\u2019m extremely grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The episode will also see Nick Hendrix return as Barnaby\u2019s right-hand man, DS Jamie Winter, with the rest of the new episode\u2019s cast set to be confirmed in due course.<\/p>\n<p>It is not yet clear when the final episode in the current season, titled Dressed to Kill, will air \u2013 but we\u2019ll keep you updated as soon as we know.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Midsomer Murders returns to ITV1 on Tuesday 16th July.
