{"id":54768,"date":"2024-07-13T22:30:01","date_gmt":"2024-07-13T20:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=2070214"},"modified":"2024-07-14T04:44:55","modified_gmt":"2024-07-14T02:44:55","slug":"changing-ends-pays-tribute-to-alan-carrs-late-co-writer-simon-carlyle","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/changing-ends-pays-tribute-to-alan-carrs-late-co-writer-simon-carlyle\/","title":{"rendered":"Changing Ends pays tribute to Alan Carr\u2019s late co-writer Simon Carlyle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> The comedian has discussed the impact of the sudden, devastating loss. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By David Craig\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Saturday, 13 July 2024 at 20:30 PM<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p>Changing Ends season 2 premiered on ITV1 tonight, with the acclaimed sitcom ending on a sombre note as it paid tribute to Alan Carr\u2019s late co-writer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/comedy\/simon-carlyle-two-doors-down-dead-age-48-newsupdate\/\">Simon Carlyle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to working on the first season of Carr\u2019s autobiographical series, alongside the stand-up comic himself, Carlyle was also well known in the television industry for creating Scottish sitcom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/comedy\/two-doors-down-cathy-return-doon-mackichan-exclusive-newsupdate\/\">Two Doors Down<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His passing came as a complete surprise last summer, with notable names being quick to pay their respects, including BBC Scotland\u2019s Louise Thornton, who described him as a \u201cmajor writing talent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In statements released to press, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/comedy\/changing-ends-review-itvx\/\">Changing Ends<\/a> star Carr as well as producer Mollie Freedman Berthoud and director Dave Lambert discussed how difficult it was to return to work without their \u201cmuch missed friend\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Changing Ends: Simon Carlyle tribute explained<\/strong><\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Two Doors Down creator Simon Carlyle dies aged 48 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BdI6ZdlQoq\">https:\/\/t.co\/BdI6ZdlQoq<\/a><\/p>\u2014 BBC News (UK) (@BBCNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCNews\/status\/1689457292448600065?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"\/>\n<p>Carr told press that the idea of scripting Changing Ends without his writing partner left him \u201creally worried\u201d, as the comfortable, honest friendship they facilitated a perfect environment for creativity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLuckily, Gabby Best [who plays Ange] helped us out with a couple of episodes, but it\u2019s hard because you have to work with someone who gets you and someone you can be completely honest with,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe and Simon had that \u2013 he could tell me if a joke was rubbish and you need that kind of honesty. It was amazing to find someone like that and Simon was a one-off, we instantly hit it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carr added: \u201cIt was tough writing series 2 without him and it still makes me quite emotional to think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stand-up comedian and actor was not the only one who struggled to come to terms with the devastating loss, as producer Mollie Freedman Berthoud also discussed the difficulty of not having Simon around.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A tribute to the funny and big hearted Simon Carlyle from his writing partner Gregor Sharp. Rest in peace \u2764\ufe0f<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cpr7dAn5lQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/cpr7dAn5lQ<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Steve Pemberton (@SP1nightonly) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SP1nightonly\/status\/1689900784438091776?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 11, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"\/>\n<p>\u201cIt was so hard,\u201d she began. \u201cSimon was brilliant on this show, whether it was bouncing jokes around or helping with the structure of the script and he was so integral to the beginning of the process, putting Alan on the right path to tell his own story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the last things we spoke about was how excited he was about the episode ideas for series 2, so it was quite an easy decision for us to carry on because he loved this show and he was always so supportive of Alan telling his own story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven so, it took us months to figure out how to work without him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, director Dave Lambert spoke about what a \u201cbrilliant\u201d professional partnership Carr and Carlyle had, with<\/p>\n<p>He recalled: \u201cThey hit it off straight away, and their upbringings were very similar, even though Simon was up in Scotland and Alan was in Northampton.
