Just a few weeks on from its theatrical release, biopic Young Woman and the Sea<\/a> is arriving on Disney Plus<\/a> this weekend.<\/p>\n The film stars Daisy Ridley as pioneering American swimmer Trudy Ederle, who became the first woman to swim across the English channel in 1926 and received a huge hero\u2019s welcome on her return \u2013 which still ranks as the biggest parade for an athlete in New York City\u2019s history.<\/p>\n Before that, Ederle had already won a gold medal at the 1924 Olympics in Paris \u2013 and according to the film\u2019s director Joachim R\u00f8nning, it\u2019s hard to believe that her uplifting success story is so little-known to most people today.<\/p>\n \u201cI wasn\u2019t familiar at all with the story until I read Jeff Nathanson\u2019s script, almost 10 years ago,\u201d he explained in an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n [squirrel-affiliate-playlist squirrel_playlist_id=\u201d612\u2033 \/]<\/p>\n \u201cAnd I was baffled that I didn\u2019t know the story \u2013 and that was actually part of the intrigue for me, that, how come I don\u2019t know this story?<\/p>\n \u201cIt was such a huge world event when it happened, and probably changed women\u2019s sports forever, in many ways.<\/p>\n \u201cSo I almost felt an obligation to retell this story, you know, to my daughters, to a modern audience, and put Trudy the back on the map.\u201d<\/p>\n The film ends with real-life footage of Ederle being paraded through the streets on her return to New York, and R\u00f8nning described the fact that it still holds the record as \u201cinsane\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m so happy they have footage, the real footage of it, because it\u2019s almost unbelievable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n
