{"id":5902,"date":"2021-10-18T18:01:22","date_gmt":"2021-10-18T16:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1390927"},"modified":"2021-10-18T18:23:07","modified_gmt":"2021-10-18T16:23:07","slug":"mel-giedroyc-reveals-how-britains-best-woodworker-is-different-to-bake-off","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/mel-giedroyc-reveals-how-britains-best-woodworker-is-different-to-bake-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Mel Giedroyc reveals how Britain\u2019s Best Woodworker is different to Bake Off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Grace Henry\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 18 October 2021 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Former <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/entertainment\/great-british-bake-off-2021-start-date\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Great British Bake Off<\/a> host Mel Giedroyc is returning to our screens to host Channel 4\u2019s new competition format, Handmade: Britain\u2019s Best Woodworker.<\/p>\n<p>The series, which is judged by award-winning architect Alex de Rijke and queen of furniture-making, Helen Welch, will see nine of the country\u2019s most talented craftspeople battle it out to be crowned Britain\u2019s Best Woodworker.<\/p>\n<p>Following a series of challenges, one contestant will be sent home at the end of each episode, while the remaining carpenters will go through to the next round and take on more tasks, until just one person is left standing.<\/p>\n<p>While very similar to Bake Off \u2013\u00a0 which sees the bakers having to complete three challenges each week before an elimination \u2013\u00a0 Giedroyc has revealed how Handmade differs to the popular baking show.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Bake Off, where contestants get to practice their recipes between shows, the woodworkers on Handmade weren\u2019t allowed this privilege.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking exclusively to <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">RadioTimes.com<\/a>, she said: \u201cThe guys are phenomenal. They had no time between episodes, which is so unusual. On Bake Off, we\u2019d film at the weekends, then the bakers would have the week to practice and relax.\u201d<\/p> <p>She continued: \u201cThis was like a marathon and the woodworkers have got such grit. They\u2019re a brilliant bunch of people and enjoyed all being together, because it is usually such a solitary activity. So for them to meet others who have the same passion was wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"&quot;page&quot;\" title=\"&quot;Page\">\n<div class=\"&quot;layoutArea&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;column&quot;\">\n<p>Despite their differences, Mel is hoping Handmade will inspire viewers in the same way Bake Off has, by encouraging fans to take up the hobby themselves.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI love the idea of that \u2013 suddenly the sales of cordless power drills go up. It would be lovely to think of that happening. When times are strange and difficult, which they are, people need comforting, reassuring things, nostalgic things maybe, and I think this falls into that category.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Handmade: Britain\u2019s Best Woodworker begins on Channel 4 this week, on Thursday\u00a0at 8pm.
