Doctor Who fans were left reeling a few weeks ago when some shocking news was revealed \u2013 the next showrunner of the BBC sci-fi series will be none other than former Who boss Russell T Davies<\/a>, who revived the show in 2005 before handing over the reins in 2010.<\/p>\n

Now, Davies is coming back from 2023 for Doctor Who<\/a>\u2019s 60th anniversary year \u2013 and for the first time a current cast member from the series has reacted to the news, sharing her \u201crelief\u201d that the series would continue under the screenwriter\u2019s stewardship.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s excited about Russell,\u201d Mandip Gill, who\u2019s played Yasmin \u201cYaz\u201d Khan in Doctor since 2018 tells the new edition of Radio Times. \u201cFor me, it\u2019s so exciting and a relief to know it\u2019s going on in safe hands.\u201d<\/p>

Still, she noted, fans shouldn\u2019t get too far ahead of themselves. Before Davies takes over BBC One is airing the six-part event series Flux, followed by three specials in 2022 that will round out current showrunner Chris Chibnall and star Jodie Whittaker\u2019s time on the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe still have a year of what we\u2019re doing,\u201d Gill says. \u201cThere\u2019s so much more before that even happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though with filming on that final special already finished ahead of its airing next year, Gill\u2019s eyes are already turned to the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started, I didn\u2019t realise how significant it was taking over from other people, but now it\u2019s happening to me,\u201d she tells RT. \u201cYou\u2019re not part of it, in that you don\u2019t know what\u2019s happening. Who are the companions? What are they going to do?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to watch it, be nosey and think, \u2018How\u2019s it different to ours?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
