RadioTimes.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\u201cWhen we made this film \u2013 well before the words \u2018COVID-19\u2019 were even in the vernacular \u2013 we were making a bit of science-fiction, and a glorious bit of science-fiction, familiar in many ways (there\u2019s been a lot of \u2018last human beings left on planet Earth\u2019 type films before), with the new wrinkle of Seamus the dog [who plays Goodyear] \u2013 that was new,\u201d the actor said.<\/p>
\u201cNow, after all of this \u2013 if you can be so bold as to suggest \u2013 there is a sort of theoretical worst case scenario here. Let\u2019s imagine that the virus was even stronger and more deadly than it was,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting \u2013 I saw the movie not too long ago and there\u2019s a scene where he [Finch] explains to Jeff what happened, how society broke down, and it goes back to something almost as benign as a solar flare. That\u2019s almost reassuring \u2013 that\u2019s not a slow-moving contagion that goes about and kills everybody.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd yet, at the same time, there was the issue about recollections about how society broke down and I think that ends up being perhaps closer to behavioural theory than science-fiction: we have seen elements in which ignorance and irrationality and passions and opinion have held more sway in popular behaviour and that there is evidence of, \u2018Hey, I\u2019m gonna take care of myself and I don\u2019t care what anybody else says or thinks.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cWe carry it to a far, murderous extreme in the movie by way of our flashbacks, but it\u2019s not hard to see that somehow, \u2018Ah, we might be a little accurate in the study of human behaviour under such circumstances.\u2019\u201d Hanks said. \u201cThis from a movie that we started long before the idea of a worldwide lockdown and as many morbidities that have come along with COVID-19 could\u2019ve even been imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you had told us when we were on the set shooting this film that during the post-production people would be in lockdown, be in masks and people wouldn\u2019t be able to travel across borders, we would\u2019ve thought, \u2018Well, let\u2019s make that movie.\u2019 I\u2019m glad we didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
