PD James\u2019 bestselling Inspector Dalgliesh books are getting a brand new adaptation on Channel 5, which of course means a whole new cast.<\/p>\n

Doctor Foster star Bertie Carvel will be the latest actor to play the poem-loving policeman, following in the footsteps of Roy Marsden and Martin Shaw.<\/p>\n

However, this being a mystery series there are plenty of ominous and potentially guilty supporting characters populating the English countryside, which is sure to make Dalgliesh\u2019s work all the more difficult.<\/p>\n

Bertie Carvel plays Adam Dalgliesh<\/h2>\n

Who is Adam Dalgliesh? <\/strong>Adam Dalgliesh is, of course, the protagonist of the PD James mystery novels. Reserved and enigmatic, Dalgliesh is a widower still grieving his wife\u2019s death, and has been reluctant to commit ever since.<\/p>\n
This new series will follow the Detective from the 1970s to the present day, adapting the novels Shroud for a Nightingale, The Black Tower, and A Taste for Death.<\/p>\n
Carvel has told RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press that the series is \u201ca story about the first year of grief\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n
\u201cI mean, for me, the big excitement about this job was to knit these stories together,\u201d he said. \u201cAs a TV detective, you have the opportunity to tell a story that\u2019s running parallel to the murder stories, like the murder of the week kind of thing.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo there\u2019s another story going on about what\u2019s in the detective\u2019s mind, which may or may not relate to the murders. With these, the way of knitting these three stories together for me was that it\u2019s a story about the first year of grief, he\u2019s just lost his wife and child.\u201d<\/p>\n
Where have I seen Bertie Carvel before?\u00a0<\/strong>Bertie Carvel is best known on-screen for his roles as cheating husband Simon Foster in Doctor Foster and magician Jonathan Strange in Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. However, he has also starred in the film adaptation of Les Miserables, won two Olivier awards for his work on stage in Matilda the Musical and Ink, and will soon be seen in season five of The Crown<\/a> as Tony Blair.<\/p>\n
Carvel is married to actress Sally Scott, who also appears in two episodes of Dalgliesh as Helen Rainer.<\/p>\n
