Doctor Who: Flux<\/a> continues on Sunday and judging by recent comments from the show\u2019s bosses, the upcoming episode is set to take a leaf out of Marvel\u2019s book when it comes to storytelling.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine<\/a>, executive producer Matt Strevens teased Chapter Three: Once, Upon Time<\/a>, revealing that the episode is an \u201cambitious\u201d one for the long-running sci-fi drama.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn terms of form, and structure, especially in Chapter Three \u2013 [it] really does take the show in a new direction,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s very ambitious, and it credits the audience with sophistication and intelligence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich is something we always do, of course, but with this, it\u2019s very much asking you to trust the show and go on a ride. Not everything is given to you in the moment. As with a lot of television now, it credits the audience with a degree of patience \u2013 that they\u2019re not going to know quite what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the third episode explores a form of storytelling that the show hasn\u2019t done before, comparing it to Marvel films.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, it was reminiscent of some of the shows that I love \u2013 of the way that Marvel Studios are telling stories; the way they\u2019ll parcel out the information, and things can seem incredibly random and abstract, but they\u2019re not in the end.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re part of a very cohesive whole, but you don\u2019t get served straight away.\u201d<\/p>

Showrunner and executive producer Chris Chibnall added that the next episode of Flux \u2013 the first Doctor Who series to tell one over-arching story over the course of six episodes \u2013 will connect to everything that\u2019s gone before it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou couldn\u2019t tell this particular story, with this particular structure, in any other season of Doctor Who,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re using the shape of a serial to give us a very different type of storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Episode three will follow The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) as she navigates the aftermath of the apocalypse on a planet that shouldn\u2019t exist, with Azhur Saleem making his Doctor Who directing debut.<\/p>\n

\u201cA strand that runs through my episodes is the Doctor\u2019s journey of self-discovery \u2013 delving into places she\u2019s never been before and coming up against things she\u2019s never experienced,\u201d Saleem said. \u201cWhich I think is really interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n
