Downton Abbey fans, get your diaries out \u2014 the film sequel\u2019s distributors, Focus Features, have now confirmed a release date.<\/p>\n

Downton Abbey: A New Era will be released in March 2022<\/strong>, rather than the expected Christmas release, but new first-look images of the characters in action should tide fans over until then.<\/p>\n

Hugh Bonneville previously\u00a0confirmed a Downton Abbey sequel was in the works<\/a>, and the film will star a slate of new cast members, including Dominic West (The Pursuit of Love<\/a>).<\/p>\n

In addition to the returning main cast, Hugh Dancy (Hannibal), Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy), Nathalie Baye (The Assistant) and West will all join Downton Abbey for its sequel feature.<\/p>\n

Bonneville, who plays Lord Grantham, previously\u00a0said that the Downton team \u201cwould love\u201d to make a second film \u2013 before revealing that a script for it already existed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere won\u2019t be any more TV episodes, but we would love to make another movie. There is a script, it has been written and seen, but a little thing called coronavirus got in the way of us filming it. It would be lovely to think that later this year the cameras could start rolling,\u201d he said during an interview\u00a0on The One Show in February 2021.<\/p>\n

Downton Abbey 2 release date<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Downton Abbey fans will be thrilled to hear that a new cinematic release date of Friday 18th March 2022 has been announced for the hotly anticipated film.<\/p>\n

The film distributors originally scheduled to premiere in time for Christmas 2021, but the movie\u2019s release date was pushed to the following year after delays in production due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, and will depend on which cast members return for the series.<\/p>\n

In addition to Hugh Bonneville,\u00a0Mr Carson actor Jim Carter previously told us<\/a> that he, too, would be open to a second movie.\u00a0If the film makes lots of money, \u201cI\u2019m sure there will be pressure to do more,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t know, we don\u2019t have any plans, but\u2026 if people turn out and make gazillions \u2013 who knows?\u201d<\/p>\n

Imelda Staunton exclusively told RadioTimes.com<\/strong>\u00a0that she would \u201cof course\u201d love to\u00a0reprise her role as\u00a0Lady Maud Bagshaw<\/a> if there were a sequel.<\/p>\n

The actress, who was cast as the third iteration of Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix\u2019s The Crown<\/a>, said that Downton \u201cwas a very nice job to do,\u201d before adding: \u201cIt\u2019s a woman with a nice arc, and a backstory that wasn\u2019t just a woman in a tiara and a long dress.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve worked with Maggie [Smith, who plays Lady Violet Crawley] before and I\u2019ve worked with Penelope Wilton [Isobel Crawley] before so you know, we know each other well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
