<\/p>
Andrew Garfield is emerging as one of the early favourites for next year\u2019s Oscar nominations \u2013 with his performance as Jonathan Larson in semi-autobiographical musical\u00a0Tick, Tick\u2026 Boom<\/a> having won praise<\/a> across the board.<\/p>\n And speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press ahead of the film\u2019s release, Garfield spoke about taking on the role of iconic Rent writer Larson \u2013 who passed away aged 35 on the eve of his hit show\u2019s debut in 1996.<\/p>\n Explaining that the film was made \u201cin collaboration with the ghost of Jon Larson\u201d, Garfield said: \u201cFor me, it felt like I was living kind of in Jon\u2019s psyche. Like we were hanging out in different chambers of Jon\u2019s memory, psyche, imagination \u2013 just who he was as a person, and in almost a timeless place.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd I think that kind of thing starts to happen when you\u2019re about to reach an important threshold in your life,\u201d he added. \u201cMemory, images, impressions, things start to break through when you\u2019re about to do something that feels important or that feels affirming or scary.\u00a0 suddenly you are met with all of the demons, all of the angels, and, and all of the rest. And that\u2019s what it felt like being on the inside of it \u2013 in that same tradition of All That Jazz, I suppose.\u201d<\/p> The film is framed in such a way that includes sections both with Larson performing on stage and also going about his everyday life \u2013 and Garfield explained that this was interesting in that it essentially allowed him to play two different versions of the character.<\/p>\n \u201cI think that there\u2019s definitely a huge distinction,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen we\u2019re doing the New York Theatre Workshop stuff he is reliving this very fateful week, but reliving it cellularly, you know \u2013 like any good actor or performer does. And he gets to totally luxuriate in his own performers\u2019 personality. And he was always at 11 \u2013 even if he was bashing out his Casio at home alone, if a song was coming through him, it was as if he was singing to the back row of the Carnegie Hall.<\/p>\n \u201cThat being said, I think to find those quieter, more intimate moments, more private moments were the real kind of the golden ones that Lin and I were really intent on mining, because his heart is not just on its sleeve, it\u2019s just like it\u2019s seeping out of every cell, it\u2019s spilling all over the kitchen table.<\/p>\n \u201cHe can\u2019t help but live this way.
