Huzzah!\u00a0<\/em><\/span>Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult return for a second season of Hulu\u2019s The Great, the zany historical romp about Catherine the Great (Fanning), and\u00a0billed as \u201can occasionally true story\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The anachronistic, \u201cfictionalised\u201d series first aired last year, and followed a teenage Catherine as she arrived in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial, philandering Emperor Peter.<\/p>\n

In season two, \u201cCatherine finally takes the Russian throne for her own \u2014 but she will quickly learn that dethroning her husband was just the beginning,\u201d according to the official synopsis.<\/p>\n

\u201cCatherine must now face the realities of \u2018liberating\u2019 a country that doesn\u2019t want to be free. Her fight to bring enlightenment to Russia will mean battling her own court and those closest to her, including her own mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Penned by Tony McNamara, co-writer of The Favourite, t<\/span>he Emmy-nominated drama won rave reviews during its first outing (check out our four-star review of The Great season one<\/a>), and expectations are even higher this year, especially given the high-profile cast addition of Gillian Anderson (Sex Education, The Crown) as Elle Fanning\u2019s on-screen mother.<\/p>\n
