Top Gear moved from BBC Two to BBC One for its 29th series in October 2020, after its lengthy success on the former channel since it premiered in 2002. It achieved figures of 5.57 million for episode four on BBC One, the highest since Chris Evans\u2019 debut in 2016.<\/p>\n
Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, explained why the show moved across to the flagship channel:\u00a0\u201cThe time is right to move the world\u2019s best motor show to the nation\u2019s most popular channel and bring it to an even broader audience on BBC One.<\/p>\n
\u201cFreddie, Paddy and Chris have revitalised the hit series with their escapades and banter; and we couldn\u2019t have asked for a better response to their series so far and the impact it\u2019s had with young audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since their debut on BBC Two in June 2019, Paddy, Freddie and Chris have managed to bring in big numbers for the revamped show.<\/p>\n
The first episode of season 27 attracted an average consolidated audience of 3.8 million viewers, making it the channel\u2019s most popular programme of 2019.<\/p>\n
The long-running entertainment show was also hugely popular among young audiences last year, occupying a spot in the top four shows on British television for 16-34-year olds during each week of its run.<\/p>\n

What happened in series 30 of Top Gear?<\/strong><\/h2>\nTop Gear returned to our screens for its 30th series in mid-March, which\u00a0came to an end on Sunday 4th April\u00a0in its usual time slot of 8pm, just before Line of Duty<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Freddie Flintoff, Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness provided even more car-based shenanigans in the world\u2019s biggest motoring show this year \u2013 although for the first time in the series\u2019s history, there was no studio audience.<\/p>\n
The trio were also unable to travel the globe for the show due to the ongoing pandemic, and so filmed all of the series\u2019 various segments in the UK.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Express.co.uk<\/a>, McGuinness said that he really enjoyed filming in Britain. \u201cBecause, you know, you live here and you sort of take everything for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut when you get out and about like you\u2019re seeing the lake districts and going off to Scotland.\u00a0The UK is absolutely beautiful, even in the winter it\u2019s beautiful so yeah it was a treat to see it especially in the Middle of this b****y pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n
While Flintoff added: \u201cIn Scotland with some of the weather we had, we got the snow you probably thought it was abroad. You could have been in Canada or somewhere. It was unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Harris even said that he doesn\u2019t think Top Gear will \u201cmove around to the same extent\u201d as it did before after the pandemic, saying: \u201cI think lots of people that have travelled an awful lot over the last 10 years for their work now realise how much they genuinely hated a lot of it and how much they hated airports and maybe we won\u2019t go back to doing the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for series 30, the three presenters steered clear of any car crashes after the big accidents of last year\u2019s shows.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have two reformed characters,\u201d Harris told The Mirror<\/a>, referring to Flintoff and McGuinness. \u201cIt\u2019s been joyous. There has been very little bent metal, there has been respect for the machinery. This is a new Top Gear.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last year\u2019s series saw McGuinness crash a \u00a3250,000 Lamborghini Diablo whilst driving in Yorkshire<\/a>, while Flintoff ran out of runway whilst riding a motorised trike at Elvington Airfield in 2019.<\/p>\n
The show\u00a0 returned to BBC One on Wednesday 7th April\u00a0<\/strong>at 7:30pm for a 30-minute tribute episode in which presenters past and present \u2013 including Jeremy Clarkson and Matt LeBlanc \u2013 reflected on the life and career of Sabine Schmitz<\/a>, who\u00a0 passed away aged 51 in March.<\/p>\n
