Hawkeye<\/a> director Rhys Thomas has revealed how he sold the spin-off to Marvel, describing the series as a combination of action flick Die Hard and murder mystery Knives Out<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In an exclusive interview with\u00a0RadioTimes.com<\/a>, Thomas revealed that 1988\u2019s Die Hard and Rian Johnson\u2019s Knives Out were \u201ctonal references\u201d behind Hawkeye, which arrives on Disney Plus<\/a> today.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what my pitch was to Marvel,\u201d he said. \u201cI said, \u2018Imagine that a wounded John McClane stumbled into a room in the Knives Out house, and then realised the door had locked behind him.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was my sort of tonal reference coming in. So that\u2019s what the show is,\u201d he added. \u201cThat\u2019s what I enjoyed coming in, that you start off from a low stakes place, it seems like it\u2019s a small problem. And this just keeps snowballing over those days leading up to Christmas.<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m a big fan of the Christmas film and Die Hard was a touchstone. So being able to lean into Christmas, it\u2019s just that it\u2019s an extra tool in your kit to add atmosphere and warmth to a story, because you have to be a really odd person to not enjoy Christmas in some way as a season.\u201d<\/p>\n

The six-part series sees Jeremy Renner reprise his role as Clint Barton (aka Hawkeye) as he works together with young archer Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to face old enemies in the lead-up to Christmas in New York City.<\/p>\n

Thomas also revealed to RadioTimes.com<\/strong> that the show sets up a future for Kate Bishop in the Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/a>, saying: \u201cThe exciting thing is thinking about where that character can go.\u201d<\/p>\n
