{"id":7805,"date":"2021-11-25T13:10:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-25T12:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1519701"},"modified":"2021-11-25T13:22:30","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T12:22:30","slug":"bbc-three-to-return-as-tv-channel-in-february-after-ofcom-approves-move","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/bbc-three-to-return-as-tv-channel-in-february-after-ofcom-approves-move\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC Three to return as TV channel in February after Ofcom approves move"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Flora Carr\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 25 November 2021 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>BBC Three will return as a broadcast TV channel for the first time in six years, after Ofcom approved its relaunch.<\/p>\n<p>BBC Three, which has been responsible for such shows as <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/comedy\/fleabag-watch-stream-netflix\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Fleabag<\/a> and the record-breaking lockdown hit <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/normal-people-season-2-release-date\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Normal People<\/a>, will launch its new channel in February 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Ofcom consulted and carried out a public interest test on the BBC\u2019s plans to relaunch BBC Three as a broadcast channel, saying: \u201cWe carefully assessed the BBC\u2019s plans, alongside evidence and feedback gathered during our consultation,\u201d it said. \u201cWe found that the channel\u2019s potential value to viewers ultimately outweighs the limited impact we identified on rival broadcasters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issues today (25th November), Ofcom said: \u201cAs required by the BBC Charter and Agreement, we have carried out a competition assessment. We have reviewed how the BBC has developed its proposals and its assessment of their public value, as well as assessed the impact of the BBC\u2019s proposals on competition. We consulted on our provisional determination that the BBC could go ahead with its plans, and have taken account of feedback from stakeholders in response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis statement explains our final determination that the BBC may proceed with its proposal. We have also set conditions in the Operating Licence to secure the contribution of the BBC Three broadcast channel to the delivery of the BBC\u2019s Mission and Public Purposes.\u201d<\/p> <p>Fiona Campbell, Controller BBC Three said: \u201cI\u2019m absolutely\u00a0thrilled that Ofcom have now confirmed that BBC Three will be returning to TV screens next year. This is a big moment, with the new channel providing a destination for young audiences to discover more content on the BBC. We will work hand in hand with iPlayer to provide a broad offering that is representative of the whole of the UK and we will continue to back new talent and bold ideas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis approach will bring the audience a distinctive mix of programmes that are there to entertain, inspire and challenge thinking, at a pivotal and exciting time to be young in the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BBC\u2019s Commercial, Rights &amp; Business Affairs Director, Jo Korn, said: \u201cThis new deal is great news for both the BBC and independent producers, and we are really pleased to have concluded this in good time for launch.
