The Grand Tour star James May has said ahead of the upcoming special that while the show isn\u2019t \u201crunning scared of cancel culture\u201d, it does try to be progressive.<\/p>\n
May\u2019s comments follow the resurfacing of claims by singer Will Young that the Amazon Prime Video series included \u201chomophobic<\/a>\u201d jokes back in a 2019 episode.<\/p>\n When asked whether he was more conscious about making jokes in The Grand Tour Presents: Carnage A Trois<\/a>, May told RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press:\u00a0\u201cI hope we\u2019re always careful about the jokes we make because we\u2019re not actually trying to alienate people or offend people.<\/p>\n \u201cWe make fun of people \u2013 that\u2019s not quite the same thing. We try to be inclusive in that everybody is equally open for mockery and derision \u2013 mainly ourselves, let\u2019s be honest,\u201d he added. \u201cSo I\u2019m not aware that we made any crass homophobic jokes or comments. I hope we didn\u2019t, but I\u2019ll have to look back at it.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019re running scared of cancel culture and all the rest of it but I suppose unconsciously and just like everybody else in the world, we\u2019re probably reassessing how we think about things, which is no bad thing in my view because society is a work in progress and it must always move on.<\/p>\n \u201cSo we\u2019re not entrenched. We haven\u2019t dug ourselves in and said, \u2018No, we\u2019re living in the 1970s with 1970s attitudes, make us a cup of tea, love.\u2019 We\u2019re not doing that. We\u2019re actually quite modern people, I think.<\/p> \u201cExcept for Richard Hammond, who is obviously stuck in about 1955 in his E-Type Jaguar. But yes, on the whole, we\u2019re reasonably progressive, I hope.\u201d<\/p>\n Back in 2019, Young criticised The Grand Tour for an episode in which May informs Clarkson that the car he\u2019s driving is very popular in the gay community, after which Hammond says: \u201cYou should have gone the whole hog\u2026maybe some nice chaps, suede but ventilated at the back.\u201d<\/p>\n He tweeted<\/a> at the time, describing the jokes as \u201cpathetic and actually homophobic\u201d, while in October this year, he told The Times<\/a> that Hammond was \u201cthe worst one\u201d out of the Grand Tour trio, adding: \u201cThe producers chose to make the narrative: Jeremy Clarkson is driving a hairdresser\u2019s car. Basically, Jeremy Clarkson is gay.\u201d<\/p>\n Addressing the remarks, Hammond told\u00a0RadioTimes.com<\/strong> recently: \u201cI made it plain at the time, it was three years ago.
