\u201cThe Oogie Boogie character looks like a Klansman,\u201d she told The Independent<\/a>. \u201cOogie Boogie is a derogatory term for African Americans in the American South. I begged the powers that be to change something about that character, because of that. I said, \u2018This is so ugly and dangerous and antithetical to everything inside me.\u2019 I did not win that fight\u2026 It was a troubling part of the film for me, to be frank.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI really did beg Tim to reconsider,\u201d she added. \u201cParticularly the name\u2026 it\u2019s a really evil derogatory term. That\u2019s not a fight I won. I think it\u2019s a fun segment of the story as it was executed but it\u2019s a troubling one.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Nightmare Before Christmas plot<\/h2>\n
The 76-minute film tells the story of Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town.<\/p>\n
One day, Jack accidentally travels through a portal and finds himself in Christmas Town, instantly becoming enamoured with the December holiday.<\/p>\n
In fact, he becomes so obsessed with Christmas that he attempts to take Santa Claus captive and brings him back to Halloween Town \u2013 whose residents aren\u2019t quite as welcoming to the prospect of festive cheer.<\/p>\n
The Nightmare Before Christmas cast<\/h2>\n
Jack Skellington is voiced by Dog Day Afternoon and The Princess Bride star Chris Sarandon, with the exception of the songs, which are performed by the film\u2019s composer and frequent Tim Burton collaborator Danny Elfman.<\/p>\n
Other cast members include Beetlejuice\u00a0 \u2013 and more recently Schitt\u2019s Creek \u2013 star Catherine O\u2019Hara as the voice of Sally, Jack\u2019s ragdoll love interest, and William Hickey as the mad scientist Finkelstein.<\/p>\n
The voice cast is rounded out by Glenn Shadix (Beetlejuice), Ken Page (All Dogs Go to Heaven), Paul Reubens (Batman Returns),\u00a0and Ed Ivory, the latter of whom voices Santa Claus.<\/p>\n
