Screenwriter Steven Moffat has discussed Russell T Davies\u2019 shock return to Doctor Who<\/a>, teasing big things in the next era of the long-running sci-fi drama.<\/p>\n Davies resurrected the dormant property back in 2005, passing the baton to Moffat five years later, who subsequently left it in the hands of Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall.<\/p>\n Following a\u00a0decline in viewership<\/a> during the recently concluded Flux<\/a>, it is hoped that Davies involvement will take the show back to the giddy heights it achieved during his first tenure \u2013 but Moffat admits the development took him by surprise.<\/p>\n \u201cI had no idea Russell was going to do that,\u201d Moffat told Oxford Union<\/a>. \u201cHe told me the night before, he sent me an email and I read it. I was just coming home from a restaurant and I thought: \u2018Is that real? I\u2019ll see if that email is still there in the morning.\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cThen I phoned him up and said, \u2018Have you read [behind-the-scenes Doctor Who book] The Writer\u2019s Tale<\/a>? Have you read it? Because I think you should\u2019,\u201d continued Moffat. \u201cHe said, \u2018I want to do it again, I\u2019m excited, I\u2019m thrilled.’\u201d<\/p>\n The Sherlock co-creator went on to say that he has insider information on Davies\u2019 plans for the next phase of Doctor Who, teasing that the returning showrunner\u2019s ideas are \u201cso fantastic\u201d.<\/p>\n Praising his friend and collaborator, Moffat said: \u201cHe\u2019s the single best writer in television drama and he wants to do Doctor Who again \u2013 great news for Doctor Who.\u201d<\/p>
