<\/p>
Steven Moffat is dipping his toes back into the world of time travel with his upcoming adaptation of The Time Traveller\u2019s Wife<\/a> \u2013 but it looks like there won\u2019t be many similarities between the new show and his previous adventures through time and space.<\/p>\n Moffat has claimed that the new series \u201cbears no resemblance\u201d to Doctor Who<\/a>, on which he served as showrunner from 2009 to 2017, despite the fact his Who episode The Girl in the Fireplace was directly inspired by the source novel.<\/p>\n \u201cIt bears no resemblance to anything I\u2019ve done in terms of time travel before,\u201d he recently told Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, before explaining exactly how the approaches to time travel differed.<\/p>\n \u201cDoctor Who loves time travelling, and mainly it\u2019s just the bus seat they get on to arrive at their next adventure,\u201d he said. \u201cHere, Audrey [Niffenegger, the book\u2019s author] is saying to her reader, \u2018Keep up. This is the story of a man living his life in the wrong order, and I\u2019m not necessarily going to tell it in the right order.’\u201d<\/p>\n He added: \u201cWhat I admired as I read it is the fact you have to lean forward into the book and keep up. Make an audience pay attention and they will be rewarded. So, I went with the Audrey principles of it, really. We\u2019re not going to make it easy for you. You are going to pay attention.\u201d<\/p> He also explained that although the aforementioned The Girl in the Fireplace was<\/em> inspired by Niffenegger\u2019s novel, it doesn\u2019t really count as a true adaptation.<\/p>\n \u201cI read the book and loved it. It wasn\u2019t long after it came out. I remember saying to Russell [T Davies] who was running Doctor Who at the time, \u2018We should do a Doctor Who story like that,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd so, I did, which was The Girl in the Fireplace. But all I\u2019d done in Doctor Who was use the wonderful, fantastical element of an out-of-sequence relationship. That\u2019s not really doing The Time Traveler\u2019s Wife, that\u2019s running with one of the ideas from it.\u201d<\/p>\n The Time Traveller\u2019s Wife will air at some point in 2022.
