{"id":8956,"date":"2021-12-20T17:12:07","date_gmt":"2021-12-20T16:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1539768"},"modified":"2021-12-20T17:34:07","modified_gmt":"2021-12-20T16:34:07","slug":"doctor-whos-mandip-gill-there-will-be-tears-when-jodie-whittaker-leaves","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/doctor-whos-mandip-gill-there-will-be-tears-when-jodie-whittaker-leaves\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctor Who\u2019s Mandip Gill: \u2018There will be tears when Jodie Whittaker leaves\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Patrick Cremona\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 20 December 2021 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>It\u2019s been official for a long time now that Jodie Whittaker will be stepping down from her role as the Doctor in 2022 \u2013 and with <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/doctor-who-flux-series-13-review\/&quot;\">Doctor Who: Flux<\/a> having concluded earlier this month, the end of her tenure is very nearly upon us.<\/p>\n<p>First up, Whittaker will star in a trilogy of specials throughout next year, beginning with <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/doctor-who-new-years-2022\/&quot;\">New Year\u2019s Day special<\/a> Eve of the Daleks, which has been described by the BBC as an \u201caction-packed spectacular\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And co-star Mandip Gill, who has played companion Yaz throughout Whittaker\u2019s time in the TARDIS, has revealed that the fact this will be Whittaker\u2019s last Christmas as the Doctor has only recently begun to sink in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t think about it, because you\u2019re just doing it,\u201d she told <strong>Radio Times magazine<\/strong>. \u201cFilming\u2019s a long process, and you\u2019re in the moment and you enjoy it, and you think, \u2018Well, that\u2019s next year.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow it has sunk in a little bit, because of the announcement that somebody else will taking over from us,\u201d she added. \u201cTears will be shed! But not by me, because I\u2019m cold-hearted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gill\u2019s own future on the future on the show remains somewhat unclear \u2013 while Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chinball are both definitely on the way out, there has been no official announcement about whether she might stay on.<\/p> <p>Speaking before series 13 began, Gill said \u00a0<a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/doctor-who-john-bishop-mandip-gill-stay-exclusive-newsupdate\/&quot;\">\u201cnever say never\u201d<\/a> about the possibility of staying on, claiming that she couldn\u2019t rule anything out at this stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know where the specials and that are heading for everyone\u2019s character, you know?\u201d she told <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/&quot;\">RadioTimes.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s great about Doctor Who is that the audience are so open to old and new characters all the time. They don\u2019t need a whole new cast every time it starts with a new Doctor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut at the same time when that does happen, like it did happen for us [in 2018], they\u2019re also massively on board with that. This show is open to so many options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Bishop, who starred alongside Gill and Whittaker in Doctor Who: Flux, recently spoke to <strong>RadioTimes.com<\/strong> about his future on the sci-fi series.
