What\u2019s more, All Creatures Great and Small season three is in the works<\/a>, according to showrunner Ben Vanstone.<\/p>\n Based on James Herriot\u2019s real-life memoirs<\/a>, the second season follows Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) as he grapples with whether or not to leave Darrowby, in Yorkshire, for a new job in Glasgow, at his old mentor\u2019s practise.<\/p>\n Chief among the deciding factors was his slow-burn romance with Helen Alderson<\/a>, played by Rachel Shenton in the All Creatures Great and Small cast<\/a>.<\/p>\n Anna Madeley, Samuel West and Callum Woodhouse are also among the returning cast, and after you\u2019ve watched the second season there\u2019s still plenty to look forward to \u2013 the second All Creatures Great and Small Christmas special<\/a> airs on Christmas Eve.<\/p>\n But is Darrowby a real place? And where exactly is the Channel 5 series filmed? Read on for everything you need to know about All Creatures Great and Small filming locations.<\/p>\n While the original 1970s series used Askrigg as its stand-in for fictional village Darrowby, Channel 5 set their sights on Grassington, in the southern Dales.<\/p>\n Various period buildings at Grassington were perfect for the show\u2019s 1930s setting, including local pub\u00a0The Devonshire, which stood in for the exterior of the\u00a0fictional The Drovers Arms.<\/p>\n Local bookshop The Stripey Badger was also utilised in the show for scenes featuring greengrocer\u2019s GF Endleby.<\/p>\n Rachel Shenton, who plays Helen Alderson, said: \u201cIt was the willingness of the people and enthusiasm of the people which helped so much. We couldn\u2019t have wished for more.\u201d<\/p>\n And Siegfried Farnon actor Samuel West told journalists that he hoped that \u201cif this [the show] is a success it can bring some tourism their way\u201d at filming locations like Grassington.<\/p>\n \u201cI hope you can tell what a happy time we all had and that wouldn\u2019t have been nearly as true if we hadn\u2019t been living in the heart of the place,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n West later added: \u201cGrassington is the most delightful place, and for the first couple of weeks I made sure I bought plenty of wine from the wine shop and books from the bookshop. But actually going back in February this year, just after we\u2019d wrapped and just before lockdown, it was like returning to \u2013 being a prodigal son. They threw open the doors and said, \u2018How are you \u2013 and when are you coming back?’\u201d<\/p>\n In real life, Alf Wight (who went by the pen name James Herriot) ran his veterinary practice from 23 Kirkgate in the village of Thirsk \u2013 and in his books he reimagined it as \u201cSkeldale House\u201d in the the village of \u201cDarrowby\u201d. That original building is now home to a museum, The World of James Herriot.<\/p>\n So to film the Channel 5 series, producers used the exterior of a private house in Grassington. Meanwhile, the interiors were created inside a studio.<\/p>\n Ahead of the Christmas special, Nicholas Ralph told journalists at a Q&A: \u201cWhen we walked onto the set for Skeldale House and it was all decked out for Christmas \u2013 the Christmas tree was up, the decorations were everywhere, Tristan was hanging up about 50 bits of mistletoe. So yes, the Christmas feel was all around us.\u201d<\/p>\n The interior of The Drovers Arms is filmed in the Green Dragon Inn, a 13th century pub found in the Yorkshire village of Hardraw.<\/p>\n In the 2020 Christmas special, James and Helen paid a visit to Bert and Anne Chapman (played by Dave Hill and Cleo Sylvestre) after their dog Suzy gets intro trouble during labour. The elderly couple live in a tiny, cosy cottage \u2013 and surprisingly, this was all shot on location rather than in a studio.<\/p>\n \u201cWe were based in Skipton, but we drove miles and miles \u2013 I mean it was really well up in the Dales,\u201d Sylvestre told RadioTimes.com<\/a>. \u201cIt was so remote, this farmhouse, I didn\u2019t really catch where it was! But it was absolutely beautiful\u2026 it was brilliant and quite muddy!\u201d<\/p>\n Broughton Hall, a Grade I listed Georgian property located near Skipton, has often been used in the past as a filming location for projects like Netflix\u2019s The English Game<\/a>.<\/p>\n Channel 5 utilised the property for the home of wealthy local resident Mrs Pumphrey (played by the late Dame Diana Rigg in series one and Patricia Hodge from series two onwards), whose spoilt dog Tricki-Woo demands only the utmost attention from James Herriot.<\/p>\n Some scenes were also shot on the estate \u2013 Broughton Hall\u2019s park dates back to the 18th and 19th century, and was no doubt perfect for period shots.<\/p> When James Herriot first makes the perilous journey from Glasgow, Scotland, to the deepest depths of the Yorkshire Dales in episode one, he accidentally jumps off the bus to Darrowby at the wrong point \u2013 and is forced to walk the remainder of the way on foot.<\/p>\n The scene, while showcasing just how much Herriot has to learn, also highlights the vast expanse of the countryside \u2013 with not a soul or dwelling to be seen.<\/p>\n The picturesque shot of endless fields was filmed on location at beauty spot Malham Lings in North Yorkshire.<\/p>\n Nearby Malham is also used later in the series for the scene where Herriot swims in the waterfall pool, Janet\u2019s Foss, at Malham.<\/p>\n You can order James Herriott\u2019s All Creatures Great and Small<\/a> from Amazon.
