From The OA<\/a> to Glow<\/a> to Santa Clarita Diet<\/a>, Netflix<\/a> isn\u2019t afraid to drop the axe if it feels like it\u2019s not getting enough bang for its buck, with the aforementioned just some of the titles which have been cancelled. But it\u2019s a different story for After Life, the Ricky Gervais black comedy in which he also stars as a man mourning the death of his wife.<\/p>\n

Season 3<\/a>, which is available to stream now, is the show\u2019s final outing. But as disappointing as that is for those who would happily remain in the company of Tony Johnson and co for further episodes, fans will be pleased to hear that it\u2019s ending on Gervais\u2019s own terms. After Life wraps up as a fully formed series, complete with a conclusive ending, which will be music to the ears of those who have followed it from the beginning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason I thought it had legs for a third series, unlike the others [I\u2019ve made], was that I\u2019ve created such a big world,\u201d Gervais told RadioTimes.com<\/a><\/span>. \u201cIt\u2019s a massive world<\/a>, with so many characters<\/a>, and it\u2019s about a bigger issue and bigger subjects. I needed a bit more time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He went on to say that he \u201cdidn\u2019t plan the third\u201d, adding: \u201cI never plan a second. I hope there\u2019s a second, but I even made the first season [in a way] that it could end there if something happened. Like if no one watched it, if the broadcaster said, \u2018That was the biggest flop ever\u2019, or I got hit by a bus.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I never really planned the third until it happened. I said to Netflix, \u2018I\u2019ll do a third if the second goes down a storm\u2019, because you don\u2019t want to do it for the sake of it. You want it to be demanded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Would Gervais ever be tempted to revisit these characters and the fictional town of Tambury, especially given that 100 million households have watched the series to date, according to Netflix\u2019s own figures?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve really got to end it now,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s mad to end it now. It seems mad on every level, but I think it\u2019s the right decision artistically. <\/span>It\u2019s a finite story, and that\u2019s its strength.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And that\u2019s a definite no?<\/p>\n

\u201cNever say never,\u201d he said diplomatically. \u201cYou never know what\u2019s going to happen. But at the moment, I\u2019m 99% sure this should be it. I don\u2019t think I can top that ending. And it\u2019s not the end. It\u2019s there forever. It\u2019ll always be around. People are watching it for the 10th time. And hopefully, they\u2019re going to be watching it when I\u2019m dead.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s the right decision [to leave it there]. In 10 years\u2019 time, I think I\u2019ll be proved right.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

While it\u2019s unlikely that we\u2019ll meet the likes of Kath (Diane Morgan), Lenny (Tony Way) and Brian (David Earl) again, Gervais intends to reunite the cast further down the line: \u201cI\u2019m going to work with all these people again. The chance of us all getting together again is astronomical.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But whether any of them will appear in his next project with the streamer remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Netflix] are happy with me,\u201d he said. \u201cThey bought the next thing.\u00a0 It was either the fourth series of [After Life], or the first series of the new thing, and I\u2019m going for the new series. And I don\u2019t even know what that is yet. But they\u2019re very happy for me to carry on. They\u2019re happy with [After Life] ending.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to play one role or write one thing for the rest of my life. And the public don\u2019t either. They think they might, but they don\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
