A tragic loss

My great grandmother Bridget was widowed three months before she gave birth to her 11th child with Charles in 1913, whom she named Francis. Here she is with the children and her parents.

Herbert, who is shown as a baby on the opposite page, played for Ipswich Town Football Club. He is on the right-hand end of the front row in the above team photograph.

Alfred Smith married my grandmother Doris Myra Isabella Clements in 1924.

Lieutenant John Walsh

My paternal grandfather John Walsh (1895–1971) joined the Irish Volunteers in 1915 and served with them during the Irish War of Independence.

Herbert’s obituary

Herbert was nicknamed ‘Darkie’ Clements “because of his swarthy complexion”.
