The National Trust will be offering free entry to many of its historic properties and gardens during this year’s Heritage Open Days event running from 6 to 15 September. 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of Heritage Open Days, thanks to over a decade of support from players of the People’s Postcode Lottery and the help of more than 33,000 volunteers. It’s England’s contribution to European Heritage Days, taking place across 50 countries. Other events in the UK are Open Doors Days in Wales, European Heritage Open Days in Northern Ireland and Doors Open Days in Scotland.

Every year in September, historic sites across England throw open their doors for free volunteer-run events, including access to places not normally open to the public. Heritage Open Days 2024 will take place from 6 to 15 September, celebrating its 30th anniversary.
What is the theme for Heritage Open Days 2024?
The theme is ‘Routes – Networks – Connections’. According to the Heritage Open Days website: “In 2024 we will be celebrating how people and ideas have moved around and come together throughout history. The transport routes, communication networks, trade unions and social clubs. The travellers who have spread ideas and the hosts who welcome them. There are so many stories on our doorsteps just waiting to be uncovered.”
