What places feature in Matt Baker: Travels with Mum & Dad?

In the first episode Matt, Janice, Mike and Archie head to the Northumberland County Show – North East England’s biggest annual celebration of all things countryside. They get to see behind the scenes at what it takes to put on this massive event, help prep some of the award-winning animals and get into the spirit of the show as Janice enters Archie and Stanley the cockerel into two of the categories. They also pay a visit to nearby Corbridge, a stunning historic site just a few miles from the showground, which was the most northerly town in the entire Roman Empire.

In the second episode, the Bakers visit Durham for the 191st Durham Regatta. The Bakers help prep for the big day, Matt and Janice are inducted as honorary umpires and Mike meets a world-beating veteran rower. Elsewhere the family explore Durham Castle and Durham University Botanic Garden.

In the third episode, they visit the magical historic house and gardens of Cragside in Northumberland – Britain’s original smart home. Designed and built in the 19th century by ‘magician of the north’ Lord William Armstrong, inside the Bakers discover his host of pioneering hydroelectric inventions which powered the house and attracted royalty from around the world to marvel at their ingenuity. Janice sees how Lady Armstrong’s influence as a budding amateur botanist created one of the country’s biggest alpine rock gardens, Matt and Janice get hands on making ‘singing hinnies’ in a kitchen whose devices include a Victorian dishwasher and Matt helps conserve a colossal six metre high marble fireplace.
