LostCousins (lostcousins.com<\/a>) dates back to the early days of the web. Founded in 2003, it pioneered the idea of using a website to connect people with shared ancestry to each other.<\/p>\n\n

Its concept is simple. You just log your ancestors\u2019 details as recorded on various census returns, then that is cross-referenced with the information entered by LostCousins\u2019 116,000-strong membership. If any matches are found, you\u2019ll be alerted and given the opportunity to connect.<\/p>\n\n

LostCousins originally started with just the 1881 England and Wales census, but has since expanded to now include additional censuses from England and Wales (1841 and 1911), Scotland (1881), Ireland (1911), the USA (1880) and Canada (1881), plus Newfoundland (1921).<\/p>\n\n

The site is free to use \u2013 up to a point. When a match is confirmed, you\u2019ll need to upgrade to a paid subscription (just \u00a310 a year) to be able to initiate contact. You don\u2019t have to subscribe if you\u2019re happy to sit and wait for them to contact you.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

In addition, anyone with a LostCousins account receives a regular free newsletter by email that alerts users to free periods, as well as discounts from other companies and great family history tips<\/p>\n\n

2<\/strong> Review Your Profile <\/strong>
You\u2019ll be emailed a temporary password <\/span>\u2013 use this to log into your account. Once done, click \u2018Change password\u2019 to access your profile page. Replace the temporary password with a strong one of your own choosing, then review and edit your profile further before clicking \u2018Submit\u2019.<\/p>\n\n

3 Start Entering Data <\/strong>
With your first census to hand, navigate <\/span>to the \u2018My Ancestors\u2019 page and click \u2018Add new household\u2019. Start by selecting which census you\u2019re using from the dropdown menu (1881 is the best census to start with). You\u2019ll see the reference number fields change depending on which one you\u2019ve chosen.<\/p>\n\n

4 Fill In Your First Ancestor <\/strong>
After entering the reference <\/span>numbers as instructed by the site (additional help is available to identify these), input the details of your first ancestor in that household: surname, forename, middle names or initials, plus age. Finally, select your connection to the ancestor and click \u2018Add\u2019.<\/p>\n\n

5 Add More Details<\/strong>
You\u2019ll see your ancestor appear under <\/span>\u2018Current household\u2019. Click their name to edit what you\u2019ve entered, or add additional information such as maiden surname, exact birthdate and so on. This step is optional for your own use, and does not affect the matching system. Click \u2018Save\u2019 when done.<\/p>\n\n

6 Add The Rest Of The Household <\/strong>
Now click the \u2018+\u2019 symbol <\/span>next to your ancestor\u2019s entry to add another member of the household. You can add non-family members too \u2013 just use the \u2018Relationship\/Connection\u2019 dropdown to select their status, such as visitor or lodger. Continue adding the rest of the household.<\/p>\n\n

7 Keep Adding More Relations <\/strong>
The more relations you enter, <\/span>especially from the 1881 census, the more chance you have of finding matches with other users. When you\u2019re ready, click \u2018Search\u2019 at the top of the page to see if LostCousins can match your information with anyone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n

8 Review Your Matches <\/strong>
If no matches are found, don\u2019t worry \u2013 <\/span>your details are now in the database for the future. If matches are <\/em>found, you can review these under \u2018My Cousins\u2019. You will need to buy a subscription to contact a new cousin, unless you used the code WDYTYA when registering for a free upgrade until 31 August 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

9 Get In Touch <\/strong>
Click the \u2018Make contact\u2019 link to reach out to <\/span>potential matches. Choose whether you\u2019re happy to exchange email addresses or not, then click \u2018Contact\u2019. Initial contact is always made through the website, and you\u2019ll be notified when they respond to you. All of your information remains private at all times.<\/p>\n\n
