In <em>The Match Girl and the Heiress <\/em>(Princeton University Press, 2014)<span> US historian Seth Koven writes,<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">\u201cThe diaries and letters of three lower-middleclass women, Ruth Slate, Eva Slawson and Minna Simmons, record in painful, graphic detail how Stanley James preached from his pulpit \u2018the religion of love which must reunite all\u2019, while\u2026 [having] sex with some of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">The Stanley James in question was the grandfather of journalist Robert Nurden. Stanley detailed his life in two autobiographies, but did not mention any affairs. Within religious circles he was well known. He was friends with the writer GK Chesterton, and worked with the philosopher Bertrand Russell.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Stanley\u2019s autobiographies <em>The Adventures of a Spiritual Tramp <\/em>(Longmans, Green and Co.,<span> 1925, available from the Internet Archive <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\">archive.org<\/a> <\/strong>at <a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/arch-spiritual-tramp\">tinyurl.com\/arch-spiritual-tramp<\/a><strong>) <\/strong>and <em>Becoming a Man <\/em>(John Miles, 1944) paint a romantic picture of his adventures as a cowboy in Canada, a hobo riding the rails in the American West and a progressive preacher in England. But Robert needed the complete picture.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">He began his research by heading out to Calgary in Canada \u2013 just as Stanley did in 1893.<span> To prepare, Robert visited the website of the Glenbow Western Research Centre and explored its digital collections<\/span> (<a href=\"http:\/\/glenbow.ucalgary.ca\">glenbow.ucalgary.ca<\/a>). \u201cI came across some 1890s pictures of cowboys on a ranch near where Stanley had been staying. One of them was fresh-faced and looked just like him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">The young man is helping to brand cattle in one photo, and<span style=\"color: rgb(102, 102, 102)\"> a<\/span> group of cowboys on their<span style=\"color: rgb(102, 102, 102)\"> horses. \u201cMy partner Sue knows<\/span> horses very well. She took one<span style=\"color: rgb(102, 102, 102)\"> look and said, \u2018He hasn\u2019t a clue<\/span> how to handle a horse.\u2019 \u201d When<span style=\"color: rgb(102, 102, 102)\"> Robert visited Canada he took<\/span>  with him copies of these photos<span style=\"color: rgb(102, 102, 102)\"> and prints of Stanley taken<\/span> around the time he emigrated.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-dark-color\">COWBOY TURNED JOURNALIST<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><span>While he was a cowboy, Stanley<\/span> wrote reports for the local paper,<span> the Calgary Herald. I found lots<\/span> of his articles in the archives<span> when I was over there.\u201d<\/span> Robert also sought out the<span> Jumping Pound Ranch where<\/span>&nbsp;Stanley had worked, and met a rancher called Jim Bateman. The pair realised their grandfathers had worked side by side. \u201cJim had a photograph from 1893 that was part of the same set as the two I had. He pointed to the fresh-faced cowboy in his picture and said,<span style=\"color: rgb(18, 18, 18)\"> \u2018That\u2019s your grandfather.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Robert pieced together the story behind the photos. \u201cStanley arrived in Halifax in April 1893 with his brother Norman, who went to work on another farm.<span> I think that the photos were taken in his first week or two at the Jumping Pound Ranch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">In 1897, Stanley had a change of fortune. One day he delivered his report to the paper in person, and the editor o ered him a job as deputy. He jumped at the chance. \u201cIn the archives, I found a wonderful supplement he\u2019d masterminded about the Klondike Gold Rush for the paper,\u201d says Robert. But his downfall came just a couple of months later.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">\u201cHe wrote an expos\u00e9 about the manipulative recruitment agencies in Canada that lured miners from Britain out to the gold rush by creating false expectations.\u201d<span> Stanley was sacked. Penniless, he walked to Lethbridge, 130 miles away, where Norman ran a general store. \u201cWhen I was over there, I found the remains of the railway track he\u2019d walked along for 24 hours, too afraid to stop because of the rattlesnakes. He talks about reading the Bible and having some sort of conversion,\u201d says Robert.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">By this time, his father was a Congregational minister in Wimbledon, South-West London.<span> He fell ill and Stanley, though unqualified, took over his duties and was eventually appointed temporary minister. After five years, in 1906, Stanley was o ered a job at Trinity Church in Walthamstow,<span> East London, and the couple<\/span> moved back to the south-east.<span> This was a fruitful period for<\/span> Stanley. He became involved<span> in<\/span> the Labour Party and the<span> peace movement, and began<\/span> the religious experimentation<span> that would see him convert to<\/span> Catholicism in 1923. \u201cHe wrote<span> thousands of articles and became<\/span> a<span> leading Catholic writer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Robert\u2019s book was shaping up to be a very rounded life story of a fascinating man, but then he came across Koven\u2019s claim that Stanley had slept with some of his female congregants. Koven\u2019s evidence<span> included a primary source: a letter written by Minna Simmons, a young woman who clearly had had an a air with Stanley. She wrote: \u201cWe went into the front room alone and he kissed me\u2026<\/span><span> He pleaded with me dear to give him everything a woman can give a man. I told him I was sure we should regret it\u2026 Well dear, I did.<\/span> The tears I have shed have quite washed away any wrong I did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large\"><p>In raising their children and all that she put up with, the real hero is Jess<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">The letter featured in <em>Dear <\/em><em>Girl:<\/em><em> The Diaries and Letters of Two Working Women, 1897\u20131917 <\/em>by feminist writer Tierl Thompson (The Women\u2019s Press, 1987).<span> Through family links, she had access to hundreds of secret diaries and letters written by three friends \u2013 Ruth Slate, Eva Slawson and Minna \u2013 who had attended Stanley\u2019s church. Seeing them was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Stanley had indeed had an affair and liaisons with members of his congregation. He and Eva had fallen in love too, but their relationship remained platonic.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">One account in Eva\u2019s diary reads: \u201cI enjoyed the girls group this evening. Mr James looked in upon me and his daughters including little Kitty were with us.\u201d \u201cThat was my mother aged seven,\u201d says Robert. \u201cIt was very moving to read the description.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Could Jess have been aware of Stanley\u2019s dalliances? Robert isn\u2019t sure. \u201cMinna seemed to have known Jess quite well. She was a nurse, and helped with the<span> kids. I suspected that he was a complex and multidimensional character before I started the research, and I found this to be true.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">But there was another side to the story. \u201cStanley was wrapped up in himself. His thoughts and ideas came first, and people second. In raising their seven children and all that she put up with, the real hero is Jess.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em>Between Heaven and Earth <\/em>(2021) by Robert
