How to use Ancestry\u2019s revamped mobile app<\/h2>\n\n

You\u2019re in for a surprise if you\u2019ve not used Ancestry\u2019s app for iOS and Android recently: it just got a major facelift to go with the slew of improvements made over the past year. Not only has it received a complete redesign, but the app has taken on the functionality of the previously separate AncestryDNA app while adding a \u2018Discover\u2019 tab to provide an at-a-glance view of updates to your tree.<\/p>\n\n

In this month\u2019s article, we\u2019ll walk you through the major new features you can access now. One of them \u2013 Ancestry Stories \u2013 is something we\u2019ll be covering separately in detail in a few issues\u2019 time, when we hope two new features (the ability to incorporate records and events from your tree into your Stories) will have been implemented.<\/p>\n\n

Another new feature that we\u2019ll be discussing in more depth in a future issue is one that\u2019s only just starting to roll out. Photo Editor allows you to both colourise and automatically enhance the photos you upload to your family tree using artificial intelligence. At the time of writing it\u2019s still in Beta, and is only available to select users \u2013 check the Top Tip to see where you\u2019ll be able to access it once it\u2019s live.<\/p>\n\n

When the Photo Editor launches you\u2019ll access it via the Tree Gallery. There are three options: colourise, restore and enhance.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n

1. New <\/span>Homepage<\/h4>\n\n

After logging into the app, you\u2019ll start at the \u2018Discover\u2019 tab, which is split into two sections: \u2018For you\u2019 is your personal homepage, while \u2018All hints\u2019 allows you to review all of the latest hints attached to your tree. Your personal homepage is packed with suggestions, anniversaries and links to more useful content and resources.<\/p>\n\n

2. Never <\/span>Forget A Date<\/span><\/h4>\n\n

Upcoming birthdays and other anniversaries can be shared with other people and apps \u2013 tap the \u201c\u2026\u201d button next to one to share it. You can also add anniversaries as a widget if you\u2019re on iOS. To set it up, navigate to the Widgets view from your phone\u2019s homescreen (keep swiping left), then scroll down, tap \u2018Edit\u2019 and finally tap \u2018+\u2019 to select Ancestry.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

3. Create Stories<\/h4>\n\n

At the top of the \u2018Discovery\u2019 tab, you\u2019ll be invited to create your first slideshow for Ancestry Stories. Tap \u2018Add story\u2019 to get started \u2013 you\u2019ll be prompted to select an ancestor, then create a slideshow mixing various content: title slide, short biography, photographs, freeform text, and more to follow. Once done, publish it to your tree to share with others.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

4. Revamped Tree View<\/span><\/h4>\n\n

Switch to the \u2018Tree\u2019 tab where you can now expand your tree to show more than six generations at once \u2013 tap the \u2018^\u2019 button above an ancestor to expand their tree above yours. Also, a new \u2018Tree Gallery\u2019 button in the top-righthand corner lets you view \u2013 and edit \u2013 all of the photographs in your tree from a single browsable list. Tap this to bring the list into view.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

5. Tag <\/span>Faces In Your Tree<\/span><\/h4>\n\n

The Tree Gallery now supports face tagging: tap a photograph followed by the \u2018i\u2019 button. Even if it\u2019s marked as tagged, tap \u2018Edit\u2019 followed by \u2018Tag photo\u2019. You should see a box around your relation\u2019s head: tap this, then either select their name if it\u2019s listed or use the search tool to add their name manually. Tap \u2018Done\u2019 to apply the tag.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

6. Identify Tagged Photos<\/span><\/h4>\n\n

Going forward, when you browse through your family history gallery, look for a tiny head icon next to a photograph that indicates it\u2019s been tagged to one or more people in your tree. When the new Photo Editor goes live (see the Top Tip), you\u2019ll also see a wand icon appear next to photos that you\u2019ve colourised or enhanced.<\/p>\n\n

7. Scan <\/span>Photos <\/h4>\n\n

Add photographs using the \u2018+\u2019 button at the bottom of the gallery \u2013 choose \u2018Scan photos (beta)\u2019 to access a new tool to scan multiple photos at once. It\u2019s simple to use \u2013 you can even tap the mic icon to take the photo using your voice so you can keep your camera steady. Once done, each photo is cropped, straightened and uploaded separately.<\/p>\n\n

8. Share Your Tree <\/h4>\n\n

Another recent improvement is the ability to configure tree sharing directly from the app. Tap the share icon in the Tree view to invite a new user \u2013 select their desired role (guest, contributor or editor) and send the invitation. To edit existing shared user permissions, you can navigate to your tree settings via the icon in the top-lefthand corner.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

9. DNA Features<\/h4>\n\n

The AncestryDNA app is no more \u2013 its features are now incorporated into the main Ancestry app via the \u2018DNA Story\u2019 and \u2018Matches\u2019 tabs. You\u2019ll need to purchase and then activate an AncestryDNA kit before you can use the tabs to trace your lineage on a map and find matches who\u2019ve shared their DNA with the company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
