Queen\u2019s University Belfast<\/a> has been awarded the contract to transcribe the 1921 Scottish census.<\/p>\n

An announcement<\/a> published on 25 January on the website Bidstats says that the National Records of Scotland<\/a> has awarded a \u00a3438,366 contract for \u2018Creation of Transcriptions (Electronic Indexes) of the Historic 1921 Scotland\u2019s Census Handwritten Records\u2019 to Queen\u2019s University.<\/p>\n

The contract includes the option for two six month extensions at the discretion of the purchaser.<\/p>\n

It also specifies that the accuracy level of the data transcribed must be at least 98%.<\/p>\n

Under privacy laws, the 1921 census cannot be released to the public until at least 100 years have passed.<\/p>\n

The 1921 census for England and Wales<\/a> was published on commercial family history website Findmypast on 6 January.<\/p>\n

However, there were complaints<\/a> from some family historians about the accuracy of Findmypast\u2019s record transcriptions, which were produced by a separate company.<\/p>\n

The 1921 census for Scotland was originally due to be published on Scottish records website ScotlandsPeople<\/a> in summer 2021.<\/p>\n

However, ScotlandsPeople then announced that the release had been delayed<\/a> until \u201cin the latter half of 2022\u201d.<\/p>\n

There is no 1921 census for modern-day\u00a0 Northern Ireland<\/a>\u00a0as Ireland<\/a> was caught up in the Irish War of Independence at the time.<\/p>\n

Chris Paton, Scottish genealogy expert and author of the Scottish family history blog Scottish Genes<\/a>, said: \u201cThe lack of information coming from the NRS on its plans to release the delayed 1921 census has been incredibly frustrating. Nevertheless, this contract award is at least confirmation that things are finally moving, and it is to be hoped that the archive\u2019s stated aim to release the census in the \u2018latter half of 2022\u2019 will be realised on the timetable it has announced.\u201d<\/p>\n
