Although Anna\u2019s parents were scientists, she fell in love with acting when she was at school. However, she did a degree in history at Liverpool University, focusing on the First World War, before studying drama at the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA).<\/p>\n
2. The name game<\/h2>\n
Anna\u2019s birth name was Anna Charlotte Martin. Unfortunately for the family historians of the future, she added her grandfather\u2019s name \u2018Maxwell\u2019 to her surname when she joined the actors\u2019 union Equity because there was already an actor named Anna Martin.<\/p>\n
3. Young for her age<\/h2>\n
Anna played the main role of Lyra Belacqua in His Dark Materials<\/em> (2003\u20132004), the National Theatre\u2019s hugely ambitious two-part adaptation of Philip Pullman\u2019s classic fantasy trilogy. Anna was 26 at the time, although Lyra matures from a child to an adolescent during the story.<\/p>\n4. BAFTA glory<\/h2>\n
Anna won her first \u2018Best Actress\u2019 BAFTA for playing Esther Summerson in BBC One\u2019s 2005 adaptation of Charles Dickens\u2019 Bleak House<\/em>. She won her second BAFTA three years later for another dramatisation \u2013 she played \u2018N\u2019 in Poppy Shakespeare,<\/em> Channel 4\u2019s film of Clare Allan\u2019s novel about patients at a mental health hospital.<\/p>\n5. Art reflects life<\/h2>\n
Like the endlessly harassed Julia, her character in BBC Two\u2019s award-winning sitcom Motherland<\/em> (2016\u20132021), Anna has two children, albeit two daughters rather than a boy and a girl. Their father was her late husband Roger Michell (1956\u20132021), who directed such films as Notting Hill<\/em> (1999) and Enduring Love<\/em> (2004).<\/p><\/body><\/html>\n
