On its Facebook page, TNA said: \u201cWe\u2019re pleased to announce that we\u2019ve awarded Ancestry UK<\/a> the contract to digitise the first tranche of MOD service personnel records.<\/p>\n \u201cBoth parties are looking forward to working to make these important records accessible in digital format.\u201d<\/p>\n A spokesperson at Ancestry said that they were \u201cthrilled\u201d to have been awarded the contract and that records would gradually go online between 2024 and 2029.<\/p>\n Previously, all British military service records dating from after 1920, including records of men and women who served in the Second World War<\/a>, were held by the MOD.<\/p>\n MOD records of deceased servicemen and women can only be ordered by their next of kin for a \u00a330 fee, although the fee will be abolished from 1 April 2023.<\/p>\n The ordering process can take up to a year<\/a>.<\/p>\n In February 2021 the MOD began transferring 9.7 million military records for individuals with a discharge date before 31 December 1963 to TNA.<\/p>\n Records for regiments including the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers<\/a>, the Army Air Corps<\/a>, the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, the Royal Military Police or Corps of Military Police, the Royal Army Pay Corps, the Royal Army Physical Training Corps, the Military Provost Staff Corps, the Royal Corps of Army Music, the Royal Army Education Corps, the Royal Pioneer Corps, the Intelligence Corps, the Officer Training Corps, and the Non-Combatant Corps, are already searchable on TNA\u2019s online catalogue.<\/p>\n Any member of the public can search for the records, and they can either view the records at TNA for free or order a copy for a fee.<\/p>\n Rosemary Collins is the features editor of\u00a0<\/em>Who Do You Think You Are?
