{"id":31790,"date":"2024-03-11T15:34:33","date_gmt":"2024-03-11T14:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/36b7cd5d-99d1-4fb8-a691-66481c908e48"},"modified":"2024-03-11T16:34:33","modified_gmt":"2024-03-11T15:34:33","slug":"the-10-most-watched-archive-films-on-bfi-player","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/wdytya\/rss_feed\/the-10-most-watched-archive-films-on-bfi-player\/","title":{"rendered":"The 10 most watched archive films on BFI Player"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Rosemary Collins\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 11 March 2024 at 14:34 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>From an Edwardian tram ride to a heart-rending look at life in Belfast during the Troubles, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfi.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Film Institute (BFI)<\/a> has revealed the most popular glimpses of historic Britain in its archive collections.<\/strong><\/p><p>The BFI unveiled the \u2018Top 10 Most Watched Films You Have Never Heard Of\u2019 to celebrate 25 years of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.national-lottery.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Lottery<\/a> funding \u2013 with an appearance from comedian Paul Merton.<\/p><p>Merton, who traced his own family history on <em>Who Do You Think You Are?<\/em> this year, presented a short video offering his own unique commentary on <a href=\"https:\/\/player.bfi.org.uk\/free\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Britain on Film<\/a>&#8216;s 10 most popular film clips.<\/p><p>\u201cThey are incredible and are a wonderful way to get lost in our history and heritage for an hour, or even a day,\u201d he said.<\/p><p>BFI Player\u2019s free archive film service lets viewers stream thousands of historic films capturing ordinary life in Britain over the past 120 years.<\/p><p>Since the website launched in 2015, it has attracted 75 million views.<\/p><p>The ten most popular clips feature cities including London, Belfast, Aberdeen and Nottingham, and date from the dawn of the moving image to the 1960s and 70s.<\/p><p>The film is part of the wider National Lottery 25th Anniversary celebrations.<\/p><p>Since the first draw in 1994, the National Lottery has invested over \u00a3933 million in its partnership with the BFI, funding almost 23,000 projects including hit films such as <em>Billy Elliot<\/em>, <em>The King\u2019s Speech<\/em> and <em>I, Daniel Blake<\/em>.<\/p><p>The BFI has now launched the next phase of Britain on Film, with <a href=\"https:\/\/contribute.bfi.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BFI Contribute<\/a>, a crowdsourcing platform for members of the public to identify the streets and locations seen in archive films.<\/p><p>The 10 most watched films on Britain on Film are:<br\/><strong>1. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/player.bfi.org.uk\/free\/film\/watch-sunshine-in-soho-1956-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Sunshine in Soho (2,548,336 views to date)<\/strong><\/a><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"\/><p><strong>Melodie Hyams 1956\/BFI, Britain on Film<\/strong><\/p><p>1950s Soho beats with far more energy than its 21st century counterpart in this vivid time capsule.<br\/><strong>2. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/player.bfi.org.uk\/free\/film\/watch-christmas-in-belfast-1977-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Christmas in Belfast (1,984,223 views to date)<\/strong><\/a><\/p><p><strong>1977 \u00a9 Crown Copyright\/BFI, Britain on Film<\/strong><\/p><p>Christmas in Belfast at the height of &#8216;The Troubles&#8217;
