A major new set of prison registers from Barlinnie prison in Glasgow has gone online.<\/p>

The set of 180,000 records from Scotland<\/a>\u2019s largest prison has been published on ScotlandsPeople<\/a>, the Scottish government\u2019s family history website.<\/p>

The records date from the prison\u2019s founding in 1882 until 1899.<\/p>

The collection can be searched by name and features digitised images of the original registers.<\/p>

The registers contain detailed information on prisoners who were held at the prison. Each prisoner\u2019s register entry records:<\/p>

His date of admission to the prison<\/li>

Details of any previous imprisonments<\/li>

His name, including any aliases<\/li>

His age<\/li>

His height<\/li>

His marital status<\/li>

His place of residence, divided into \u2018Where Born\u2019, \u2018Late Residence\u2019 and \u2018where spent the greater part of Life\u2019<\/li>

His weight on admission and on release<\/li>

Any distinguishing marks<\/li>

The nature of his offence<\/li>

His occupation<\/li>

His religion<\/li>

Whether he was literate<\/li>

Whether he received education while in prison<\/li>

His state of health on admission<\/li>

His date of trial<\/li>

Whether he was convicted or acquitted<\/li>

The sentence received<\/li>

His conduct in prison<\/li> <\/ul>

The record set also includes a photograph album with over 2000 photographs of prisoners.<\/p>

The records include information about young people who were put in the prison. For example, they show that on 31 January 1883, 15-year-old James Duffy, alias James Davie or James Carroll, was admitted. He was a labourer from Glasgow and his crime was \u201cAttempt to Commit Theft\u201d.<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n
